I’ve been pinged more than a few times via thoughtful members of our community about whether or not we’re going to have to change the name of Pressgram based on “crack down” of Instagram’s new brand guidelines.
Specifically, here’s what Instagram is asking software developers and companies to do in terms of naming their apps and products:
Instagram developers may fairly and accurately indicate that their applications are compatible with Instagram, but may not use the Instagram trademarks in their own brand, or suggest that Instagram sponsors or endorses their product.
- Name your product something that is unique and original to you
- Use the convention “[Your App Name] for Instagram” to indicate that your product is integrated with Instagram
- Design your own app icon that represents your brand
- Use “Instagram,” “IG”, “Insta” or “Gram” in your app name
- Use the Camera Logos, or the Instagram name or logo, in your app icon
- Use the Instagram stylized font in your product or marketing materials
(I bolded the specific area in question.)
Those that are directly affected as far as I can tell are those applications and organizations who have built their company and product around Instagram’s ecosystem, directly leveraging the Instagram API to pull and push information.
For example, applications that display Instagram photos or use the photos to do physical prints (a service to Instagram users) are subject to this change.
While you cannot use the word “Instagram” or “IG” in your product’s name, it’s ok to use one (but not both) of the following: “Insta” or “gram”
The previous version of their API TOS suggested that this would be a good thing. And of course now their changing it up and disrupting thousands of companies work. In some cases, this will ultimately destroy the brand equity and perhaps even business for some of these poor companies.
Seriously Facebook? WTF?! This crackdown spits in the face of all those people who have worked their tails off to simply support your growing business and network. I think you guys are evil.
What Should / Can We Do…?
The question is still before us, though, as a community in determining whether or not we should change our name. Not because of pressure from Instagram and their developer TOS but whether we should even have such an explicit and connotative connection.
I’ve thought about this on both sides and it’s hard to choose which one is better. I don’t feel any pressure to change especially because I’m in love with the name, to be honest, but at the same time I can see changing it up and really removing ourselves from that mental connection altogether.
In the Launch Forums via the Launch Team we’ve already cycled a few names around just in case and for kicks. Love your thoughts as well.
This image here feels even more appropriate now.
